Bob "Big D" DeLorenzo Memorial Scholarship

Bob "Big D" DeLorenzo Memorial Scholarship: "All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated...As therefore the bell that rings to a sermon, calls not upon the preacher only, but upon the congregation to come: so this bell calls us all:....No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." John Donne Meditation XVII: No Man Is An Island"

The Fairmont Senior High School Foundation, Inc. and the DeLorenzo family gratefully acknowledge your generous contribution to the Bob "Big D" DeLorenzo Memorial Scholarship Fund to be awarded each year to outstanding scholar athletes at Fairmont Senior High School who wish to continue their education at West Virginia University. Your memorial donation will help deserving Polar Bears embark on their educational quest.

David eulogized his father remembering, as we all do, Bob's resonating and guiding voice always willing to share his wisdom as well as his infectious and comforting laugh. Gina shared the Renaissance Man's favorite poem, and Rockie dedicated the game ball to Sharon, the wind beneath the wings of her high school sweetheart and their three children. David concluded with prophetic words from Albert Pine, "What we do for ourselves dies with us….what we do for others and the world remains immortal." Using that criteria, Big D is truly one of the immortals. At this time of remembrance we must all reflect upon that which made him so special, so loved, and so loving.

He loved his family.

He loved Fairmont Senior High School and his extended Polar Bear family.

He loved storytelling, golfing, hunting, and woodworking. His athletic passions remained wrestling and football, although his duties as athletic director allowed him to attend and enjoy all sports.

The stories will go on, much like the love for him in the hearts of his legion of friends. With reverence and respect we honor the memory of Bob DeLorenzo. (b. 12/10/41 -d. 11/4/06). We mourn his loss; however, his legacy of Polar Bear Pride as teacher and coach and his support of athletics at FSHS shall continue
